HP-10 Tongue Profile

If you have ever edge glued thin stock, you know the hassle of getting the faces aligned to minimize the work to make the faces planar. All of our tongue kits make a tongue with a length that is twice the width of the tongue. You simply set up the HP-10 fence to locate the tongue and cut until the plane quits cutting. This is a crucial technique when working with thin pieces of exotic wood.

The real benefit of creating a tongue longer than the width is the ability to use these kits to make offset tongues for floating panels. This is a time honored technique that allows the wood to move while constrained in a frame or box sides. Not doing this almost always results in the wood splitting. The advantage here is the tongues are precisely sized for the corresponding grooves.

Another really cool use of our tongue profile, in particular the 1/16” profile, is the ability to liberate the tongue from the parent stock to create precisely sized inlay or purfling strips and trim. Cut the tongue, and the strip can be easily and precisely liberated from the parent stock with either a flush cut saw, thin dado plane, and some cases you can split them off after scoring with a chisel. Again, the advantage of this method; the strips are precisely sized to fit in a groove made with the identically sized dado/groove profile.

The wider tongue profiles can be used similarly to create precise splines. All of this precision is done without the need for power. Each of the tongue profileis color coded to match the corresponding dado/groove profile as well!
