A gift as precise as the work.
One of the coolest things about a shoulder plane is that they do a marvelous job of what they were designed to do, and that is cleaning the end grain shoulders of tenons. There are lots of other uses as well, but this is task they tamed.Back when John was designing and building furniture, he always back-cut tenon shoulders to insure the joint pulled tight 100% of the time. This was done via chisel work. Why not build a shoulder plane with tapered sides to do this in one step? So, building on the tradition of our unique foxtail shoulder plane design, we are pleased to introduce the Limited Edition HP11-FW Tapered Body Shoulder Plane. The HP11-FW features sides that are tapered two degrees from the sole creating an acute angle of 88 degrees per side. In addition to getting into places no square body plane can match, the HP11-FW remains a steadfast plane for both edge and end grain cutting needs. One must wonder why this has never been done before (if it has, we haven’t seen it) and I think I know the reason; if the sides are tapered, so must be the iron. As a tapered iron wears, it will eventually become narrower than the sole width. For this reason, we included 3 irons with the HP-11FW. We are certain this will be a lifetime supply.
